Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed viral social media reports claiming the National Assembly approved new states, emphasizing that no proposal has passed the legal process required.
During Tuesday’s plenary, he clarified that while over 42 proposals have been submitted to the Constitution Review Committee, none have progressed beyond the initial stage.
He stressed that state creation requires several constitutional steps: legislative approval, referendum, and presidential assent, none of which have been fulfilled.
Akpabio warned communities and advocacy groups against holding meetings or initiating campaigns based on unofficial state creation narratives.
He cautioned against social media-fueled misinformation, stating: “Social media, in its current form, is garbage in, garbage out.”
