Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Youth Corps members arrived early on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at several polling units across Nodu and Okpuno communities in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, ahead of the ongoing governorship election.
By 8:00 a.m., INEC staff were already stationed at Nodu Village Hall, which houses Polling Units 009, 010, 023, 024, 025, 027, and 028. Election materials were seen neatly arranged, while voter registers were displayed to enable residents verify their names before accreditation.
Residents in the area also offered chairs and other support to ease the process, while security agents maintained routine patrols to ensure peace and order.
Despite the restriction of movement announced by the Inspector-General of Police, parts of Awka South remained active, particularly around the Nodu axis, where shops were open and tricycle operators continued to move passengers freely.
At Umuobi Village Hall, Awkuzu, as of 8:54 a.m., voting had yet to commence at Polling Units 004 and 005, although a large crowd of voters had already gathered, waiting patiently for INEC officials to finalize preparations.
A police officer on duty confirmed that “everything is in order” and that there were “no security threats at the moment.”
Meanwhile, petty traders and food vendors took advantage of the election atmosphere to sell food and drinks to voters.
One of the traders, Mrs. Justina Oyibo, said she came out early to cater to voters who might need refreshments, while another vendor, Mrs. Grace Igwebuike, noted that “many left home without breakfast, so as they vote, they can eat and regain strength.”
Across polling centers visited in Awka South, the environment remained calm and organized, with INEC officials, security operatives, and residents cooperating to ensure a smooth, credible, and transparent electoral process.
