Former Kogi West Senator and 2023 Kogi State governorship candidate, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s failure to address Nigeria’s escalating political crisis.
Melaye announced his resignation on Thursday via a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, where he also shared a signed resignation letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Ward 1 Chairman in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area, Kogi State.

“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” Melaye stated.
Melaye, who has been a vocal figure within the PDP, especially during the 2023 Kogi governorship election, declared that he could no longer, in good conscience, remain part of a party he believes has deviated from its original ideals.
“Please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” the letter concluded.
He expressed gratitude for the platform the PDP gave him, noting that his decision was not taken lightly but based on deep reflections about Nigeria’s future and the party’s perceived incapacity to deliver true leadership.
Melaye’s exit comes amid a wave of defections from the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections. Just earlier this month, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also tendered his resignation from the party, citing irreconcilable differences and accusing the party of abandoning its founding principles.
