Lagos Federal High Court grants activist Scott Iguma ₦10 million bail with strict surety conditions in a defamation case over alleged false video and threats linked to real estate firm PWAN.
Justice Friday Oghazi of the Federal High Court in Lagos has granted activist and influencer Scott Iguma bail in the sum of ₦10 million, with one surety to answer charges of alleged defamation and threats to life related to his social media posts.
Iguma, who faced a 10‑count charge for allegedly posting a false video and making life-threatening remarks over the weekend, was granted bail after three days in custody. The surety must either show property ownership within Lagos or be a government civil servant at grade level 12 or above with proof of tax remittance.
Bail Conditions & Court Orders
- Bail amount: ₦10 million (non-cash), plus one suitable surety.
- Surety requirements: Must be either a federal or Lagos State civil servant (GL 12+) with valid tax and identity documentation, or own property within court jurisdiction. The court also prohibited both sides from publicly commenting on the case due to its ongoing nature.
Iguma was arraigned on July 17 at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, charged under Section 24(1)(b) and 24(2)(ii) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2024 for allegedly publishing defamatory content and threatening PWAN, a real estate firm. He had accused the company of issuing receipts without delivering land to investors.
Following his arrest at Yaba’s SCID and remand, his legal team filed a bail application which received no opposition from the prosecution.
The arrest sparked an uproar on social media, with celebrities and activists, including VeryDarkMan, Tunde Ednut, Stanley Ontop, and singer Kokopee, calling out what they described as an attempt to silence Iguma’s advocacy. Kokopee posted: “Injustice for one is injustice to all” upon news of the bail decision.
