The Edo State Government has reassured pensioners of its unwavering commitment to their welfare and access to universal health coverage, as part of a broader effort to improve the quality of life for senior citizens in the state.
The assurance came during a courtesy visit to the office of Deputy Governor Hon. Dennis Idahosa by members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Edo State Chapter, held in Benin City.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Friday Aghedo, the deputy governor emphasized that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo is determined to prioritize the well-being of pensioners and citizens alike.
“The Governor is committed towards the welfare of the pensioners of Edo State,” Idahosa affirmed.
Addressing concerns raised about delayed payments and outstanding pension arrears, the deputy governor assured the visiting NUP officials that efforts are already in motion to clear all verified arrears at both the local government and state levels.
“Governor Okpebholo is keen on ensuring that all outstanding arrears are cleared,” he stated.
He further disclosed that pensioners will be incorporated into the state’s Universal Health Coverage scheme, ensuring they have access to affordable and quality healthcare services.
Speaking on behalf of the union, Comrade Samuel Okhuelegbe, the Edo State NUP Chairman, highlighted key issues facing pensioners, including low pension earnings, unequal pension benefits under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), and the need for adjustments based on the new minimum wage.
“We appreciate the government for setting up a committee to review the contributory pension scheme,” Okhuelegbe said.
He urged the government to act on the report submitted by the review committee, noting that addressing the “yawning gap” in monthly pension earnings between old and new retirees would bring relief and equity.
The union appealed for a review of pension benefits to reflect the current economic realities and recent adjustments in the state’s minimum wage, stressing that many retirees are struggling to meet their basic needs.
“We ask for improved benefits for retirees, in line with the improved minimum wage for active workers in Edo State,” the NUP chairman added.
