Former President Goodluck Jonathan has reaffirmed that he is constitutionally eligible to contest for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 general elections, dispelling widespread speculations that a legal barrier could disqualify him from the race.
Speaking during a visit by the Niger State chapter of the Progressive Young Leaders Association of Nigeria (PYLAN) at his Abuja residence, Jonathan explained that contrary to public belief, the constitutional amendment that limits presidents to two terms does not apply retroactively to him.
“There’s no law in Nigeria, not even the amended Constitution, that bars me from contesting,” Jonathan said. “People spread false narratives, but if you actually study the Constitution, you’ll realise I’m fully qualified. Even those behind the amendment have clarified that it does not apply to my case.”
The former president also noted that several legal professionals and constitutional experts have affirmed his eligibility to seek another term in office if he so chooses.
On Leadership and Youth Participation
During his interaction with the youth delegation, Jonathan also called on young Nigerians to become more involved in governance, urging them not to limit their political participation to social media commentary alone.
“Young people must be part of decision-making. Real power isn’t exercised online it’s at the polling unit and within policy spaces,” he said.
He challenged the younger generation to demonstrate seriousness and unity of purpose, emphasizing that they must actively engage in the political process to effect real change.
“Leadership is not a joke,” he stated. “The idea that power must be handed to youths just because they’re young is flawed. You must prove yourselves capable and ready.”
Praise for Niger Youths
Jonathan commended the group for their visit and initiative, stating that Niger State has a rich history of leadership and integrity. He expressed confidence that with sustained efforts, the state and its youth could contribute greatly to Nigeria’s development.
