Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has revealed that he was mocked and ridiculed over his albinism during the 2023 governorship campaign.
Speaking in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the governor recalled how his political opponents used his skin condition against him in an attempt to discredit his candidacy.
Albinism, a genetic condition caused by little or no melanin production, often results in pale skin, light hair, and vision challenges.
Governor Eno explained that despite the stigma, he has chosen to turn the experience into a message of hope and encouragement for people living with albinism, especially children.
“Albinos are a golden people, and they have a golden governor,” he said.
“When we started this campaign, some people said they did not want an albino governor. Do you remember? Then my dear wife came out and said to them, ‘You may be an albino, but to me, you are my golden boy.’”
The governor noted that people living with albinism are often stigmatized, body-shamed, and denied opportunities, but his victory is proof that such barriers can be broken.
“Growing up with albinism wasn’t easy; I faced bullying, body shaming, and rejection. But today, by God’s grace, I stand proudly,” Eno said.
“That’s why whenever I see anyone with this condition, I make it a point to honour and recognise them.”
Governor Eno emphasized that his journey should inspire others with albinism to embrace their uniqueness with pride and confidence.
