Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of marginalising northern Nigeria in the allocation of federal resources.
Speaking at the Kano State Stakeholders’ Dialogue on the 2025 Constitutional Amendment, Kwankwaso expressed concern over what he described as a one-sided approach to infrastructure and development.
“From what we’re seeing, it’s like most of the national budget is now tilting in one direction,” he said. “This isn’t fair. It’s part of why insecurity and poverty are growing in our region.”
“Abuja to Kano Road Is Hell” — Kwankwaso
The NNPP leader cited his personal travel experience to highlight the North’s poor infrastructure:
“I had to travel by road from Abuja to Kano because my flight was delayed. That road is terrible. A journey that should’ve been smooth became a nightmare. This road has been under construction for years since APC came into power.”
He compared this to newer infrastructure projects in southern Nigeria, warning that concentrating development in just one region could worsen national disunity.
“Change Course Now” — A Warning to the Tinubu Govt
Kwankwaso urged President Tinubu to adopt a more balanced approach in national development.
“This is the time to convince the people that the government belongs to the whole country, not just one side,” he warned.
As the 2027 general election draws near, Kwankwaso is becoming a major political figure once again. Despite finishing fourth in the 2023 presidential race, his performance in Kano State was impressive, where he secured nearly 1 million votes and won 38 out of 44 LGAs.
Kwankwaso’s recent visit to Aso Rock has sparked talks of a possible alliance with Tinubu potentially to counter the growing opposition bloc led by Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
With the North increasingly vocal about being left behind, and 2027 politics heating up, Kwankwaso’s criticism may signal bigger shifts. Will he stay in opposition, or is a surprise alliance with Tinubu in the works?
