The Labour Party (LP) National Executive Committee (NEC) has officially appointed Senator Nenadi Usman, former Minister of Finance, as Interim National Chairman. The move, confirmed at a NEC meeting in Abuja, follows an April Supreme Court ruling that ended Julius Abure’s tenure, paving the way for Usman to guide the party during its transition phase.
- Senator Nenadi Usman leads the Interim National Working Committee (INWC).
- Senator Darlington Nwokocha, former Senate Minority Deputy Leader, was ratified as Interim National Secretary.
- The NEC also inaugurated a team of interim office holders tasked with steering the party toward its next leadership convention.
During the meeting at the Transcorp Hilton, stakeholders emphasized the necessity of reinforcing LP’s structure following recent leadership disputes. Acting Abia Governor Alex Otti underscored the importance of internal unity and called on Julius Abure and others to reconcile with the party as part of rebuilding efforts.
The NEC approved a comprehensive timetable for the upcoming 2027 general election cycle:
- Ward Congresses
- Local Government Area Congresses
- State Congresses
- Zonal Congresses
- National Convention to elect substantive National Executive roles
The National Secretariat has been tasked with releasing detailed guidelines and timelines to ensure transparent and inclusive elections across all party levels.
