The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the refund of allegedly diverted workers’ funds from the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and the immediate constitution of the Governing Board of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM).
The warning, delivered through a communiqué released after the NLC Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, stated that failure to meet these demands will result in a nationwide strike.
The meeting, presided over by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, addressed pressing issues affecting Nigerian workers, the trade union movement, and national socio-economic stability.
According to the NLC, the alleged mismanagement of NSITF funds is a direct attack on workers’ welfare, while the delay in reconstituting PENCOM’s board undermines pension administration in the country.
The Congress stressed that the Federal Government has until August 20, 2025, to take “immediate, visible, and verifiable action,” warning that any failure will leave them with no choice but to shut down critical sectors of the economy.
The NLC’s ultimatum comes amid growing labour unrest over fuel subsidy removal impacts, inflation, and wage stagnation, increasing the likelihood of industrial action in the coming weeks.
