The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, has pledged his full support for the annual Owan 10km Marathon, scheduled for January 3, 2026.
Agbebaku made the commitment on Tuesday when the race organizers, led by founder Mr. Chris Ojo of the Global Bridge Initiative, paid him a courtesy visit at the Assembly complex in Benin City.
Commending the team for sustaining the marathon over the years, the Speaker emphasized that the initiative deserves strong backing from well-meaning Nigerians, especially those of Edo origin, due to its positive social impact.
According to him, the marathon has the capacity to engage young people productively, reduce youth restiveness, and promote sports development across the state.
“There is need for everyone to support youth-focused activities that channel their energy away from social vices,” Agbebaku said.
He further revealed plans to scale the Owan Marathon into a statewide sporting event, where promising athletes can be selected to represent Edo State in national and international competitions.
Earlier, Mr. Ojo explained that the marathon now in its 5th edition was created to discover and groom young talents for international exposure. He also briefed the Speaker on the Village Register Project, an initiative aimed at compiling accurate population data across Owan communities.
During the visit, Ojo presented the Speaker’s official marathon kit for the upcoming event.
It will be recalled that organizers had earlier announced plans to sponsor top-performing athletes from Owan communities to the Sports University in Afuze, once the institution begins full academic operations.
As part of preparations for the 2026 edition, the organizers revealed that the event will evolve beyond athletics into a full cultural and community festival.
Highlights include:
- Increased prize money
- Mr & Miss Owan Cultural Ambassador Contest
- A free medical outreach for residents
- Showcasing Owan’s rich cultural heritage
According to the organizers, the festival aims to celebrate Owan’s cultural identity while empowering youths and supporting community well-being.
