Former Borno State governor and APC chieftain, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has claimed that Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, is poised to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a live interview on Channels Television, Modu Sheriff stated:
“The information available to me is that at any moment from now, Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP.”
Peter Obi defected from the PDP in May 2022 to clinch the Labour Party’s presidential ticket. He later emerged as one of the leading opposition figures during the 2023 general elections, coming third behind Tinubu and Atiku.
Since then, Obi has:
- Partnered with opposition stakeholders to form a coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
- Been associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which was adopted as the coalition’s temporary platform.
Sheriff dismissed ADC’s viability, predicting its imminent collapse:
“As far as this politics is concerned, ADC doesn’t exist. Give the party three months and it will die down.”
His comment follows increasing speculation over presidential ambitions within the coalition. Key players such as Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi have reportedly set sights on 2027, possibly prompting Obi to reconsider his path.
