Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have rearrested Ayobami Sodiq, popularly known as Spending, a close associate of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad.
According to reports by Punch Metro, Spending was apprehended in Lagos last week and subsequently transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) at the police headquarters in Abuja, where he remains in custody.
A police source confirmed the development, stating that the arrest followed a petition requesting a reinvestigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
“Spending was brought to the Force Headquarters last week following a petition to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death. He was interrogated and later detained,” the source said, requesting anonymity.
The source also disclosed that Mohbad’s wife, Omowunmi, was invited for questioning.
“She came in on Thursday, returned on Friday, and was eventually allowed to go,” the source added.
Confirming the development, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, said:
“We have Spending in our custody; Mohbad’s wife is not here with us.”
Meanwhile, the United Advocates Group, a human rights organization, has claimed responsibility for filing the petition that prompted the arrest.
In a statement signed by its counsel, Oluwatosin Adefajo, the group commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, for approving a comprehensive reinvestigation into the controversial case.
According to the group, the IGP had, through a memo signed by DCP Asuquo Effiong on August 15, 2024, directed the police legal section to review the matter. The organization said it had previously submitted a five-page petition on August 10, 2024, urging a fresh probe, following earlier petitions by Mohbad’s father through his former counsel, Barr. Taiwo Odumosu.
The group explained that it collaborated with police authorities and private investigators between March and May 2025, providing new evidence to strengthen the case.
“We are pleased that the IGP approved a reinvestigation in April 2025 after reviewing all the materials we submitted,” the statement read.
Recall that Mohbad, a former signee of Marlian Music, died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. His death sparked widespread public outrage and calls for justice.
Following his passing, the Lagos State Police Command inaugurated a 13-man special investigation team on September 18, 2023, to probe the incident. In July 2025, a coroner’s court in Ikorodu recommended the prosecution of nurse Fisayo Ogedengbe, who allegedly administered a tetanus injection to the late singer shortly before his death.
With Spending’s rearrest and a fresh investigation now underway, Nigerians await what could be the most comprehensive review yet of the events surrounding the tragic death of the young music star.
