The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that the country will experience uninterrupted electricity supply before the end of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in 2027.
Adelabu gave the assurance on Saturday during the commissioning of the Kwaru 1X15MVA 33/11KV injection substation located in the Ikotun-Egbe area of Lagos State. The project aims to significantly boost power supply to areas like Abaranje, Isijola, Omoboriowo, and Igando Road.
The minister emphasized that the Federal Government is pursuing a comprehensive strategy to tackle long-standing issues in generation, transmission, and distribution. He highlighted Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda as a driving force behind the improvements.
“Energy is the backbone of economic growth and job creation,” Adelabu said. “Nigerians can be assured of the President’s determination to deliver stable electricity before he leaves office.”
Though President Tinubu initially promised to deliver 24-hour electricity within four years, critics ; including Bolaji Abdullahi of the African Democratic Congress have voiced concern over the pace of progress. Adelabu, however, insisted that the goal is still achievable before 2027.
Progress So Far: Key Achievements
Adelabu listed several accomplishments already recorded under the Renewed Hope administration:
- ✅ Electricity Act 2023: Decentralized power sector; 12 state electricity markets activated
- ✅ National Integrated Electricity Policy developed after 24 years
- ✅ Over $2 billion in new energy investments
- ✅ 14GW installed generation capacity (up from 13GW)
- ✅ Peak generation of 5,801.44MW and record daily energy of 128,370.75 MWh in March 2025
- ✅ 700+ MW transmission capacity added via Siemens-backed grid stabilization
- ✅ ₦700bn Presidential Metering Initiative + $500m DISREP fund, targeting 3.45 million meters
Despite the progress, Adelabu admitted that issues persist, especially with distribution losses, non-remittances, and frequent service disruptions.
“We’re working with DisCos to address these issues head-on,” he affirmed.
He praised Ikeja Electric for completing the new substation in just 12 months, calling it a model for other distribution companies across Nigeria.
