The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described as “unfortunate” the confrontation that occurred between him and a military officer during an enforcement operation against alleged illegal land development in Abuja.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the minister stated that the incident would not deter his administration from enforcing the law and restoring order in the capital city.
According to Wike, officials of the FCT Administration were carrying out directives from his office regarding the demolition of unauthorized structures when they were allegedly obstructed by armed military personnel.
“When they came here, I was informed that the military came to chase them away, and I thought they were acting illegally,” Wike said. “So today, while I was in the office, they came to implement the directive that was given to them by myself. I was told that the military had taken over the place, and I had to come by myself. It is really unfortunate.”
The minister condemned the conduct of the officer involved, stressing that no individual, regardless of status or background, is above the law.
“I don’t understand how someone who has attained that position cannot come to my office to explain what’s going on,” he added. “Simply because he is a military man, he thinks he can intimidate Nigerians. I am not one who will succumb to blackmail or intimidation.”
Wike further challenged the officer to present valid documentation for the disputed property, emphasizing that the FCT Administration would not tolerate illegality.
“Where are the documents? You don’t have approval for building you don’t have it. How can we continue to allow lawlessness to prevail in the country?” he queried.
He disclosed that he had contacted the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, who both assured him that the matter would be investigated and resolved promptly.
“We are not here to cause chaos,” the minister said. “But I must make it clear that I will not allow anyone, no matter how highly placed, to flout the law or intimidate government officials in the discharge of their duties.”
