Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that he is planning a parallel PDP convention, insisting he is unaware of any convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan.
Wike made the clarification during an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
When asked about reports that he was opposed to the Ibadan convention, Wike fired back:
“I am not aware there is any Convention in Ibadan. As a NEC member, I have not been told and nobody has invited me for a NEC meeting. For me to accept that NEC has made such a decision, the NEC must have sat. If a few people who work as a team say they have held a NEC meeting, so be it — but that is not NEC.”
On whether he was planning a parallel convention, the former Rivers State governor said such an allegation was false.
“How can you say I am planning? Planning to do what? NEC has not met. If they say we are meeting tomorrow, fine. But for now, NEC has not held a meeting to decide on Ibadan.”
Wike’s comments come amid growing speculation about factional moves within the PDP ahead of the 2025 bye-elections and the build-up to the 2027 general elections.
