…Pledges Potable Water for All FCT Area Councils by 2027
In a major step toward ensuring access to clean and potable water across all satellite towns in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, has officially flagged off Lot 1 of the Bwari Township Water Supply Project.
The project involves the installation of a 198-kilometer pipe network that will deliver safe drinking water to Bwari and surrounding communities such as Ushafa, Kuchiko, and Kuduru.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Wike reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to providing potable water for every FCT resident. He revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate release of 50% of the contract sum for both the Bwari and upcoming Karu projects to guarantee early completion. Both are expected to be ready by May 2026, to mark the President’s third anniversary in office.
Looking ahead, Wike announced that water projects for Kuje, Kwali, and Gwagwalada would be captured in the 2026 statutory budget, assuring that by 2027, all six Area Councils including Abaji would have access to treated, piped water.
“By the time Mr. President’s four-year tenure expires, we would have touched all the satellite towns by providing them with clean, potable water,” Wike declared.
The Minister emphasized that the initiative would reduce reliance on boreholes while creating direct and indirect employment for youths during the execution phase. He appealed to traditional rulers, youth, women, and local stakeholders to protect and support contractors, noting that water is a basic human necessity.
FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, described the project as “history in the making,” stressing its impact on healthier children, safer households, and improved living standards.
Earlier, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, Executive Secretary of the FCDA, highlighted that the project aligns with the FCT regional masterplan, which prioritizes developing satellite towns alongside the Abuja city center.
Meanwhile, Lv Haiming, Deputy Managing Director of CGC Nigeria Limited, the project contractor, assured timely execution, promising that once completed, residents will no longer struggle with boreholes or expensive water purchases.
