In a bold political move, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has officially dissolved the Benue State Executive Council, ending the tenure of all state Commissioners. The decision was made public on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at the conclusion of the 12th (2025) Executive Council Meeting.
Alongside the dissolution, Governor Alia appointed Barr. Moses Atagher as the new Chief of Staff to the Benue State Government. Atagher, a two-time former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, is a respected legal mind and former Acting Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).
His appointment takes immediate effect.
Governor Alia expressed appreciation to the outgoing Commissioners, many of whom have served under his administration since 2023. He urged those who may not be reappointed to remain loyal to the party and support the administration from the sidelines.
“You have contributed immensely to the growth of the state. For those not returning, you have only paved the way for others to contribute their quota. Please continue to work with the system,” the Governor said.
He also clarified that the dissolution affects only the Commissioners, and other aides remain in place.
Barr. Bemsen Mnyim, speaking on behalf of the former Commissioners, thanked the Governor for the opportunity to serve.
“At every stage in life, everywhere you are called to serve is a school. We have learnt a lot while working with you,” Mnyim said.
All former Commissioners have been directed to hand over to the Permanent Secretaries of their respective Ministries with immediate effect.
