The Federal Government has named Professor Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu as the new Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Edo State.
Her appointment, which takes effect from August 18, 2025, was confirmed by the Minister of Health, Professor Alli Pate, and follows the end of Professor Darlington Obaseki’s tenure.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu, a Craniofacial Orthodontist and Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), makes history as the first woman to lead UBTH since its establishment. She is also the wife of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Joining UBTH in 1997 as a Junior Registrar, she steadily rose through the ranks to become an Honorary Consultant in 2005. She went on to serve as Head of Department for over 11 years, earning a reputation for integrity, innovation, and effective leadership.
Her impressive academic and professional record includes 55 published research works in local and international journals. She is a Commonwealth Fellow, with advanced training from the Oxford University Teaching Hospital in the UK and the University of Washington in the USA.
With over 27 years of service at UBTH, Prof. Ize-Iyamu is expected to leverage her wealth of experience, global connections, and passion for mentorship to drive reforms and elevate the hospital’s healthcare delivery standards.
