A North-East socio-political group, Bring Back Our Goodluck, has tendered a public apology to former President Goodluck Jonathan over past allegations that falsely linked him to the sponsorship of Boko Haram insurgency.
Speaking at a press conference in Maiduguri, the group’s National President, Grema Kyari, admitted that they had been misled by the propaganda of a former U.S. President and desperate Nigerian politicians, who orchestrated a smear campaign to remove Jonathan from office in 2015.
Kyari, a native of insurgency-hit Borno State, described the allegations as false, politically motivated, and damaging to Jonathan’s legacy.
“Today, we recognise Jonathan as a leader of integrity, compassion, and national vision. He was a true democrat who put the nation above personal ambition,” Kyari said.
The group further declared that Jonathan remains the only credible political figure capable of unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027, dismissing opposition candidate Peter Obi as an “emotional” choice without the required national structure to win elections.
The apology comes at a time of debates about Jonathan’s political relevance and his potential comeback, with many viewing him as a stabilizing force in Nigeria’s fragile democracy.
