Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has expressed strong displeasure over the slow pace of work on the ongoing Benin–Sapele Road project, despite financial mobilization provided to contractors.
The governor, who personally inspected the 20km stretch on Sunday evening, summoned the contractors handling the Edo State Government–funded section of the road to explain the delay or face sanctions.

Driving through the route, Okpebholo stopped at multiple points, inspecting the drains, pavements, and construction materials. He was cheered by motorists who commended the partnership between the Edo State Government and the Federal Government in fixing one of the busiest roads in the South-South region.
He also visited Peanut Junction, Ogheghe Junction by Akenuwa Community, Ogheghe Road, and the Old Road, which had long been abandoned by previous administrations despite repeated promises.
Speaking after the tour, the governor stressed that his administration is prioritizing the welfare of Edo people and is determined to ease their suffering.
“I have inspected what they are doing and the work is solid and good. But the problem is the level of speed which is not good for me. People are suffering due to the slow pace of work, and we have to do something drastic to ensure that the road is motorable,” Okpebholo said.
The governor also raised concerns about the drainage design, questioning its capacity to address Edo’s flooding challenges.
“Drainage is important, but the design currently stops in the middle of the town. Where will the water go? We will review it to ensure water is taken out of town and properly desilted, so that the road can last after completion.”
He further disclosed that the second segment of the project, covering 7km, would soon commence, with emphasis on sustainable drainage to guarantee durability.
Governor Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s resolve to push for speedy completion of the project to revive economic activities and ease the plight of road users.
“Our people are suffering and crying, and we are out here this evening to check the level of work done and ensure speedy completion,” he added.
