The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has reportedly nominated businessman and political activist Funsho Doherty as its governorship candidate for the 2027 Lagos State election.
Doherty, who is widely known for his criticism of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration in Lagos, announced his emergence in a statement shared on Friday, June 19.
Accepting the nomination, the Funsho Doherty Lagos governorship candidate said he was honoured by the confidence reposed in him by the party and pledged to offer inclusive leadership if elected.
He said:
“I accept this nomination with profound humility, gratitude, and a clear sense of purpose.”
“I am deeply grateful for the confidence our great party has placed in me and for our shared belief that Lagos deserves much better, inclusive leadership that works for everyone.”
“The real work begins now. Together, we will build the Lagos that we know is possible.”

Doherty has built a reputation as one of the most vocal critics of the APC-led government in Lagos, often raising concerns over public spending, governance, and accountability issues in the state.
His emergence as the Funsho Doherty Lagos governorship candidate is expected to add a new dimension to the political landscape ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Nigerians React To Doherty’s Nomination
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions from Nigerians and supporters of different political parties.
Timi Nez urged Doherty to work closely with Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, saying:
“Two forces that can shake APC Lagos if they come together are @funsodoherty and @GRVlagos. Do all possible to have this guy on your side. The goal should be taking Lagos back from APC.”
Another supporter, Bignamedano, congratulated Doherty and recalled a previous meeting with him.
“Congratulations. I wish you success in the coming election. I hope to meet you again, but this time in Alimosho.”
However, some party members questioned Doherty’s visibility at the grassroots level.
Ayobami wrote:
“I don’t even know you, not until the primaries day that we saw your name on the slip. You’re not even on the ground in my local government. You have hard work to do.”
Another user, identified as Theebigglovee, alleged that Doherty did not win the party primary and argued that the major contest in Lagos would be between APC and ADC.
With political activities gradually gathering momentum ahead of 2027, observers believe Doherty’s ability to build alliances and expand his grassroots presence could determine how competitive his candidacy becomes.
