Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has urged candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) preparing for the 2027 general elections to brace up for what he described as a serious struggle for political power.
Wike made the remarks on Wednesday during the party’s 109th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, where he delivered a strongly worded message on elections, internal competition, and political strategy.
He stressed that power is never freely given, insisting that anyone seeking elective office must be prepared to fight for it through hard work and determination.
“Nobody gives power. Power is taken. If you did not do so, it’s your business,” he said.
According to him, political success requires resilience, effort, and readiness to face challenges rather than expecting easy victories.
Wike, who reflected on his own political journey, said he had faced multiple struggles in his rise to office, including a contested governorship election that went through the courts up to the Supreme Court.
He noted that politicians must not expect “food is ready” politics, warning that leadership positions require consistent effort and grassroots engagement.
“You are used to people preparing something for you to come and eat, and you think it will always be like that. It cannot always be like that,” he added.
The FCT Minister also urged party members to focus on delivering electoral victories rather than making empty promises, stressing that tangible results such as winning legislative seats should be the true measure of contribution.
“If you bring a House of Representatives seat, you have done something. If you bring a House of Assembly member, you have done something,” he said.
Wike further dismissed concerns about internal party disputes, insisting that political competition, including legal battles, should not discourage members ahead of the 2027 elections.
He also advised party members to avoid mixing religion with politics, urging them instead to return to their constituencies and strengthen the party’s chances at the polls.
Despite ongoing tensions within the PDP, Wike maintained that the party remains focused and prepared for the next election cycle.
