The Federal Government has appointed Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal popularly known as KWAM 1 as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol, days after a heated controversy over his conduct at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, in a statement addressing recent incidents of unruly behaviour at Nigerian airports.
Keyamo confirmed that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had reduced KWAM 1’s six-month flight ban to one month and would partner with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to work with the artiste on a nationwide awareness campaign about acceptable airport conduct.
“FAAN will also work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward. Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the police,” the statement read.
The minister explained that the decision followed appeals from prominent individuals and KWAM 1’s public apology over the August 5 incident. The singer insisted the flask he carried contained water for medical purposes, not alcohol, as alleged by airport officials.
