The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has called an emergency meeting with native doctors, traditional priests, priestesses and other traditional leaders as concerns mount over growing insecurity in Edo State.
According to a statement issued by the Benin Traditional Council, the meeting was convened on the directive of the monarch and is expected to explore traditional measures that could complement government efforts in addressing security challenges.
The gathering has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 12 noon at the Oba’s Palace in Benin City.
The statement, signed by Chief Victor Nosakhare on behalf of the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, stressed that attendance is mandatory and that the meeting should be treated with utmost urgency.
Palace authorities said the initiative is aimed at finding additional ways to combat the rising cases of kidnapping, cult-related activities and other violent crimes troubling communities across the state.
In a related development, the Benin Traditional Council will also host youth leaders, popularly known as Okaighele, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the same venue and time.
The meetings are seen as a signal that the Benin Palace is taking an active role in supporting security agencies and helping to restore peace in Edo State amid increasing reports of criminal activities.
The move comes at a time when residents have continued to express concerns over the security situation, with authorities intensifying efforts to prevent criminal groups from gaining a stronger foothold in the state.
