The Federal Government has approved sweeping reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), extending the orientation camp programme from three weeks to six weeks as part of efforts to modernise the scheme.

Under the new reforms, military drills and parade activities during the orientation camp have been scrapped. The traditional Passing Out Parade held at the end of the one-year national service will also be replaced with a graduation ceremony.

According to the government, the changes are aimed at making the NYSC more skills-driven by equipping corps members with practical knowledge, vocational training and entrepreneurship opportunities that will better prepare them for life after service.

The Federal Government also approved the introduction of a redesigned NYSC uniform as part of efforts to give the scheme a fresh identity and project a more professional image.

The reforms are part of a broader plan to reposition the NYSC, making it more relevant to Nigeria’s current economic realities while strengthening youth development and employability.
