The Federal High Court has granted bail to activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore in the sum of ₦200 million.
According to the reported bail conditions:
- Bail is set at ₦200 million.
- He must provide two sureties in the same amount.
- One surety must be a traditional ruler from his community.
- The second surety must own verified property in Abuja.
- The court also ordered him to deposit his international passport.
The ruling means Sowore can regain his freedom once all the bail conditions are met. Until then, he remains in custody.
The case stems from charges brought by Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) over comments he allegedly made about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Sowore has denied wrongdoing.
The bail conditions, particularly the requirement for a traditional ruler as one surety and the high bail amount, have generated mixed reactions online, with some viewing them as unusually stringent while others note that courts have discretion to set conditions they consider sufficient to secure a defendant’s appearance at trial. The criminal case itself remains before the court and has not yet been decided.
