Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon has spoken emotionally about the experiences of his late colleague and friend, Alexx Ekubo, recalling how he witnessed people publicly criticize and tear him down despite what he described as Ekubo’s kind and gentle nature.
Speaking on the CreativiTea Podcast, Okanlawon described the late actor as “a very good guy” with a “beautiful heart,” but expressed concern about how easily people are often quick to judge and attack others, especially in the public space.
He said he struggled to understand the level of negativity directed at Ekubo while he was alive.
“I watched people tear this guy down… and I’m looking at our people, and I’m like, how? That’s the environment that we’re trying to build in — a place where good is not appreciated,” he said.
The actor urged Nigerians to show more compassion and restraint in how they respond to others, particularly online, adding that sometimes the most responsible action is to avoid engaging in harmful discourse.
“Can we just be kind to one another? People are going through stuff. People have made mistakes, whatever the case may be. The kindest thing that you can do is to not engage,” he added.
Okanlawon also warned that constant negativity and public criticism can create a toxic environment where people are forced to hide their true selves.
He further stressed the importance of valuing goodness and excellence in society rather than promoting hostility and judgment.
Family Concerns Emerge
Meanwhile, attention has also shifted following a statement reportedly released by a relative of the late actor. The statement, shared by David Ekubo on Instagram, alleged that members of Alexx Ekubo’s immediate family were not fully informed about key developments surrounding his passing.
It also claimed that the actor’s mother and only sibling were yet to receive a full explanation regarding the circumstances of his death.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the actor’s management or representatives concerning the claims.
