Even Fela Kuti Benefited From His Background, Says Seun Kuti

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has weighed in on the growing debate around nepotism, arguing that family background plays a significant role in shaping opportunities and life outcomes.

Speaking during a recent interview, Seun addressed critics who often label him a “nepo baby” because of his connection to the legendary Fela Kuti family.

According to the singer, there is no reason to deny the impact of one’s upbringing and family influence, noting that even his late father benefited from being born into a prominent household.

“You will see people online calling me a nepo baby, but even Fela Kuti, if he wasn’t Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s son, he wouldn’t have been Fela. Nothing comes from nothing,” he said.

Seun referenced his grandmother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, one of Nigeria’s most influential activists, to illustrate how family background can shape a person’s exposure, opportunities, and worldview.

However, the Afrobeat star emphasized that while a famous surname may create opportunities, it does not automatically guarantee success.

“I might be a nepo baby, but my father is not on stage playing my sax for me,” he added.

Seun argued that personal effort, talent, and dedication remain essential ingredients for long-term success, regardless of an individual’s family connections.

His comments have since sparked conversations on social media, with many Nigerians debating whether family influence should be viewed as an unfair advantage or simply a reality of life that exists across different professions and industries.

The discussion comes amid increasing global conversations about nepotism and privilege, particularly in the entertainment industry, where children of successful celebrities are often accused of benefiting from their family names.
