Court Remands Sowore in Kuje Prison Over Cybercrime Charges

by Editor

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered that activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore be remanded in Kuje Prison pending the continuation of his trial over alleged cybercrime offences.

The decision means Sowore will remain at the Kuje Correctional Centre until Wednesday when proceedings resume in the case filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The charges stem from a social media post in which Sowore allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.”

The court ordered Sowore’s remand after revoking the bail previously granted to him.

Justice Mohammed Umar had on June 16 revoked the defendant’s bail and issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial, where he was expected to open his defence.

Sowore has been representing himself in the matter after members of his legal team withdrew from the case.

Meanwhile, Justice Umar on Monday dismissed an application seeking his disqualification from the trial over claims of bias, ruling that there was no basis to step aside from the proceedings.

The case is expected to continue on Wednesday as the court hears further arguments on the two-count cybercrime charge brought against the activist.
