FG Plans to Replace NYSC Khaki Uniform With Adire

by Editor

The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the traditional National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform with attire made from locally produced Adire fabric as part of efforts to promote Nigeria’s textile industry and support indigenous manufacturers.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed the proposal during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday.

According to the minister, the initiative is designed to ensure government spending benefits local industries while creating more opportunities for Nigerian textile producers and artisans.

“It’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have the textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” Olawande said.

He noted that Adire is already produced in several states across the country, making it a practical alternative to the current khaki uniform.

Beyond the proposed uniform change, the minister also revealed that the government is reviewing the NYSC deployment process to ensure corps members are posted in line with their academic qualifications, professional skills, and areas of expertise.

The proposed reforms form part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to strengthen local industries, improve the NYSC scheme, and maximise its contribution to national development.
